Hippotherapy Treatment Principles-
Part I

This course is an overview of the principles of hippotherapy designed for licensed professionals interested in utilizing hippotherapy as a treatment tool within a therapy session. The subsequent equivalent of three days of training encompasses equine related topics including the importance of the quality of the horse working in hippotherapy; interpreting the body language of the horse; essential equine skills such as grooming, tacking and leading the hippotherapy horse; recognition of desirable confirmation, soundness, movement quality, and gaits; and appropriate training, conditioning, and humane treatment of the hippotherapy horse. This course will focus on movement and sensation - equine sensorimotor function, human sensorimotor function, and the powerful effect of connecting horse and human together.

Fundamentals of Equine Movement

This two-hour virtual course offers a comprehensive overview of the safe use of equine movement as an intervention tool for licensed healthcare providers in many areas, including mental and behavioral health, neuromotor, sensory, cognitive, and communication impairments, or developmental delays. Starting with equine biomechanics and expanding to how equine movement impacts human neurophysiology, participants will learn basic principles supporting the impact and
purposeful manipulation of equine movement on sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes, whether that is hippotherapy within an OT, PT, or SLP treatment or mental health/medical professional treatment in discipline-specific applications.

Hippotherapy Treatment Principles-
Part II

It is the intention of the AHA, Inc that this course gives licensed therapists a greater understanding and appreciation of hippotherapy. Equine knowledge and skills, theoretical models of treatment including the hippotherapy conceptual framework, and practical hands-on experience will all be explored to further the understanding and provision of effective and safe hippotherapy as part of a therapy practice. This 4-day course provides therapists the opportunity to treat live patients in a multidisciplinary setting with faculty supervision and dynamic problem solving.
