An Introduction on How to Incorporate Modified Vaulting to Integrate Reflexes Presented by Jennifer Davis, OTR/L, HPCS, CPRCS

Course Description:
This 90-minute course provides an overview of retained primitive reflexes, how they affect postural control, motor coordination, and sensory integration, and introduces the therapeutic use of medical-quality equine movement—specifically modified vaulting—to support reflex integration. Participants will learn foundational reflex assessment techniques and explore how equine movement can enhance neurological organization and functional outcomes in children. This session includes practical tools for identifying retained reflexes and understanding their role in occupational performance, with a focus on integrating movement-based strategies.

Intended Audience:
Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and speech language professionals working with pediatric or neurodevelopmental populations.

Course Prerequisite:
Participants should have a basic understanding of child development and sensory processing.

Course Level:
Intermediate

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1.    Identify signs of retained primitive reflexes and their impact on motor, sensory, and behavioral functioning.

2.    Describe how reflexes are assessed using observational movement-based techniques.

3.    Explain and give an introduction on how modified vaulting and medical-quality equine movement support reflex integration and neurological development.

4.    Discuss considerations for safely integrating these strategies into occupational therapy practice.
