When Medicine Meets Motion: Orthopedic and Neurological Interventions and Impact on Hippotherapy

Intended Audience:
This course is a beginner course for therapists (PT, PTA, OT, COTA, SLP, and SLPA). 

Course Description:
Many of our patients are receiving invasive and semi-invasive medical interventions, including hip surgeries, tendon lengthenings, Botox injections, cryo-neurotomy, and others. This presentation will review some of the orthopedic and neurological interventions that our patients receive, as well as the potential impact on our therapy services, focusing specifically on the impact of the incorporation of hippotherapy.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Identify at least one scenario in which use of hippotherapy is contraindicated post medical intervention.

  • Identify a precaution post cochlear implant or shunt surgery and how it can be managed.

  • Identify a method for re-introducing use of equine movement post hip surgery.

  • Identify one way of managing patients with g-tubes.

Presenter Biography:

Michelle earned her Masters of Science in Physical Therapy from Boston University in 1999. Michelle has practiced physical therapy in public schools, a pediatric clinic, pediatric home visits and currently at Chastain Horse Park in Atlanta, GA where she incorporates equine movement into her clinical practice. Michelle has treated patients across the lifespan from infants through age 65+. She is a board certified Hippotherapy Clinical Specialist and is on the American Hippotherapy Certification Board. She also volunteers on the AHA, Inc website committee.
